Location: City of Rochester

A growing construction organization is seeking a seasoned Director of Construction to provide leadership for estimating and preconstruction functions across a diverse portfolio of projects. This senior leadership role is responsible for guiding estimating strategy, overseeing cost planning and bid development activities, leading a team of estimating professionals, and supporting project pursuits from initial concept through contract award.

The successful candidate will bring extensive experience in commercial construction estimating, strong leadership capabilities, and a proven track record of delivering accurate cost projections while supporting organizational growth and operational excellence.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Direct and oversee all estimating and preconstruction activities throughout the organization.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop estimating personnel, fostering continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Implement and refine estimating processes, procedures, and quality standards to improve consistency and reliability.
  • Guide the development of estimates at all project phases, including early-stage budgeting, schematic design, design development, and final bidding.
  • Partner with senior leadership to establish pursuit strategies and pricing approaches that align with business objectives.
Cost Planning & Bid Management
  • Oversee the preparation of project budgets, detailed estimates, and formal proposal submissions.
  • Review project pricing, assumptions, and risk considerations to ensure accurate and competitive bids.
  • Ensure all estimates are submitted on time and meet organizational standards for completeness and quality.
  • Analyze project documents and specifications to identify scope requirements and cost impacts.
  • Support strategic decision-making through cost modeling, forecasting, and market analysis.
  • Coordinate the solicitation and evaluation of pricing from subcontractors, suppliers, and specialty contractors.
  • Develop and maintain productive industry relationships to strengthen market coverage and enhance pricing competitiveness.
  • Conduct comprehensive bid leveling and scope comparisons to ensure consistency among proposals.
  • Participate in pricing discussions and negotiations to maximize project value and risk management.
  • Work closely with operations teams, field leadership, design consultants, and project stakeholders during the preconstruction process.
  • Participate in planning and design coordination meetings, providing cost and constructability input throughout project development.
  • Lead value improvement and cost optimization initiatives while maintaining project objectives and quality expectations.
  • Facilitate a detailed transition of awarded projects by transferring estimate data, assumptions, budgets, and scope information to project delivery teams.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in commercial construction estimating with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated success leading estimating teams and managing preconstruction efforts.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, labor productivity, sequencing, and project execution practices.
  • Experience with subcontractor procurement, scope evaluation, vendor selection, and contract-related negotiations.
  • Proficiency with estimating software platforms, project management technology, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and project pursuits in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience supporting commercial, institutional, industrial, mixed-use, hospitality, healthcare, residential, or multifamily construction projects.
  • Established relationships within the subcontractor and supplier community.
  • Expertise in conceptual estimating, cost planning, budgeting, value engineering, and financial analysis.
  • Experience collaborating with owners, consultants, architects, and engineering teams during project planning and design development.
  • Strong understanding of market conditions, pricing trends, and risk assessment methodologies.
