Job Description Summary

The Student Access and Achievement (SAAP) Student Success Counselor position is responsible for providing counseling and advising for continuing HEOP students and support the recruitment, admission, and successful enrollment of new students into the program. This person meets regularly with a caseload of HEOP scholars and serves as liaison with faculty and staff throughout the institution to ensure equitable access to the educational opportunities and supports available to all students.

The SAAP Student Success Counselor will also be responsible for supporting programmatic endeavors for other programs within the SAAP office.

Successful student outcomes at the institution rely on a matrixed, integrated approach to providing wrap-around support services. Consequently, this position is expected to collaborate with colleagues across the institution in facilitating access to academic, experiential and wellness resources, ensuring the student thrives throughout their academic journey. The SAAP Student Success Counselor is expected to be proactive and consistent in engaging campus colleagues to explore, develop, implement and assess outcomes through data-informed decision making.

The SAAP Student Success Counselor also provides support in the planning and implementation of the Summer Start bridge program as well as providing additional student support across all SAAP programs.

Essential Functions Student Success Support
  • Meet regularly with a case load of SAAP students to monitor their academic, personal, financial and career progress with a focus on retention and progress toward graduation.
  • Provide appropriate outreach referrals for students in crisis.
  • Maintain accurate records for individual students on assigned caseload.
SAAP Recruitment Support
  • Provide support to Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) & SAAP student recruitment efforts by representing the program at College Fairs and high school visits.
  • Attend on-campus recruitment and yield events.
Summer Start Bridge Program Support
  • Assist in the planning, implementation and engagement efforts during the Summer Start bridge program for new HEOP and other SAAP program cohorts.
  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring and training of Summer Start resident assistants.
Supplemental Functions
  • Organize co-curricular programs for students including workshops, events and activities.
  • Assist with data collection and program assessments.
  • Maintain SAAP website and social media accounts.
  • Performs a variety of related duties as assigned.
Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills Required

Education and Experience
  • Masters degree
  • 3-5 years of direct professional experience support student success in a college or university setting
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of best practices, trends, and student development theory in supporting college student success with a focus on traditionally underserved and/or systematically marginalized populations.
  • Experience with programmatic development, evaluation, and data assessment in a college or university setting.
  • Ability to be flexible and work comfortably with a high degree of independence.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally, ethnically and neurodiverse student populations.
  • Experience working with student databases and/or student management software/technology.
  • Spanish-speaking bilingualism is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience helping diverse students and their families navigate financial aid information and other aspects of financial literacy is desirable.
Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills
  • Masters degree in a higher education; college student affairs; or college student advising
  • 2-5 years of direct experience working with or in support of diverse students in an counseling and/or advising setting
