Job Title
Special Education Teacher
LocationCP Rochester – Winton Road Facility
Salary$50,000 - $65,000 per year commensurate with experience
EmploymentFull Time/School Year – 37.5 hours a week (Monday‑Friday 8:00 am‑4:00 pm). Includes a 6‑week summer program. All school breaks are paid. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Summary / ObjectiveThe Special Education Teacher plans and provides educational instruction to young children with disabilities in a pre‑school classroom, creating and maintaining a structured and effective program and safe environment that meets each child’s individual development needs. The teacher works collaboratively with classroom staff, therapists, and psychologists.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Education with NYS Certification for Students with Disabilities (Birth – Grade
2). - Experience working with young children with developmental delays.
- Knowledge of child development, developmental disabilities, and student learning.
- Knowledge of content and instructional planning and implementation.
- Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to modify classroom activities to accommodate individual needs.
- Demonstrated commitment to performing job duties and tasks at a high level of performance.
- Strong leadership skills.
- Effective communication skills.
- Effective classroom management skills with emphasis on structure and routine.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to facilitate group meetings.
- Ability to set priorities and adapt to change.
- Impart the agency philosophy of “Equal Opportunity, Independence and Realization of Individual Potential” to children, families, staff, and community resources.
- Maintain confidentiality of information in accordance with agency policy and FERPA regulations.
- Administer standardized assessment tools to develop Individual Education Program (IEP) goals for each identified special‑needs student following NYS learning standards.
- Document progress through quarterly goal updates and amend goals as needed.
- Demonstrate knowledge of technology and literacy devices that enhance instructional opportunities.
- Organize a structured instructional program for special‑needs children in collaboration with teacher assistants or aides.
- Maintain required paperwork, including daily/monthly attendance records.
- Adapt and modify the early‑childhood curriculum/lesson plans to meet children’s needs.
- Incorporate individual student, family, and socioeconomic backgrounds to enhance learning and communication.
- Participate in all parent‑teacher conferences for special‑needs children.
- Attend all staff and discipline meetings.
- Coordinate classroom team and planning meetings to facilitate appropriate programming.
- Participate in the district Committee on Preschool Special Education and the Committee on Special Education.
- Supervise students, interns, and volunteers in the classroom.
- Develop 1:1 aide plans, review and teach techniques required.
- Utilize techniques/methods specific for children who need additional learning support.
- Define programs/lessons with paraprofessionals and the coordinator.
- Provide feedback to staff on techniques to improve student success; train or retrain as needed.
- Handle emergency health situations.
- Schedule parent and family visits in conjunction with the director or designee.
- Requisition supplies and equipment through the coordinator or program director.
- Develop an annual inventory of classroom equipment and supplies.
- Participate in conferences, workshops, and in‑service training as needed.
- Adhere to agency policies, procedures, and department guidelines.
