Job DescriptionSenior professional with strong knowledge of the area. Designs, develops and tests optical technologies and systems. Interacts with device, hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems; specifies, selects and qualifies active and passive optical components, develops and benchmarks system performance models, implements test procedures and evaluates suitable test instrumentation. Provides multi‑discipline support to instrumentation production by resolving technical issues associated with components, parts, products or systems;
tests new and existing designs and documents changes through a formal engineering change notification process. May provide recommendations for cost‑reduction efforts and apply quantitative analysis to determine root causes of highly technical problems, proposing, developing and implementing corrective actions.
- Actively participate in the development of complex Electro‑Optical sub‑assemblies such as digital imaging systems, thermal imaging systems and laser positioning systems.
- Serve as an active member of the New Product Introduction (NPI) teams, supporting the development of modern Electro‑Optical sub‑assemblies from concept to production.
- Verify proposed design solutions via a combination of analyses and tests.
- Support manufacturing to ensure proper knowledge transfer, timely resolution of design issues and effective test methodology development.
- Support design improvements of established Electro‑Optical modules.
- Collabore closely with Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Systems Engineering and Operations to ensure high‑quality design solutions.
- Generate related documentation including analysis summaries, specification documents and test reports.
- Develop and test sophisticated image‑processing algorithms using MATLAB.
- Participate in and present results at design review meetings for new Electro‑Optical modules.
- Keep up‑to‑date with Electro‑Optical industry trends and new technologies relevant to Wescam’s business.
- Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 9 years of prior relevant experience, or Graduate Degree with a minimum of 7 years, or in lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.
- Eligibility for a U.S. government security clearance.
2 – 5 years experience in one or more of the following:
- Strong knowledge of basic optics principles:
- Laser systems
- Geometrical optics, imaging, lens design
- Radiometry
- Electromagnetic wave propagation
- Thin‑film optical coatings
- Familiarity with various image sensor technologies (CCD, CMOS, Thermal Imagers, etc)
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills; proficiency with MATLAB or similar language
- Proficiency in optics and electronics lab environments
- Understanding of analog and digital video concepts:
- Color science
- NTSC & PAL standards
- Digital video standards
- Resolution and sensitivity measurements (MRTD, MRC, NETD, MTF, etc)
- Familiarity with a wide range of engineering fields (mainly Mechanical, Electrical & Software)
- Proficiency with optical design software (CodeV or Zemax)
- Knowledge of range performance modelling tools (Modtran, NVTherm, SSCam, etc) an asset
In compliance with pay‑transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington, and the Greater D.C., Denver, or NYC areas is $135,000 MIN – $250,500 MAX. The salary range for this role in Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York State, Cleveland, Ohio, and Vermont is $117,000 MIN – $218,000 MAX.
