Position Overview

The Stationary Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting of steam boilers, hot water boilers, HVAC systems, chillers, refrigeration equipment, and central plant mechanical systems. This role supports the safe and efficient operation of facility infrastructure while ensuring compliance with environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude, experience with plant operations, and the ability to respond effectively to equipment issues and emergency situations within a regulated healthcare environment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate steam and hot water boilers, including startup, shutdown, firing, cleaning, and routine operational adjustments.
  • Monitor, test, control, and operate boilers, HVAC equipment, and auxiliary systems through computerized building automation and control systems.
  • Service, maintain, and troubleshoot heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Conduct testing of boiler, HVAC, and water treatment systems to ensure proper operation and compliance.
  • Analyze test results and maintain proper chemical treatment levels within mechanical and piping systems.
  • Operate and maintain absorption, centrifugal, screw-driven, hermetic, and other commercial chiller systems.
  • Start, regulate, monitor, and troubleshoot refrigeration and chiller equipment to maintain required operating conditions.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair pumps, valves, motors, controls, piping systems, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Respond to equipment failures, system alarms, and operational emergencies.
  • Assist with facility emergency response activities and implement evacuation procedures when required.
  • Handle, store, and utilize hazardous materials in accordance with established safety and environmental regulations.
  • Support environmental incident response activities, including chemical spills, oil spills, and related events.
  • Perform work in regulated environments and support compliance with facility safety requirements.
  • Coordinate with contractors and facility personnel to support maintenance projects and operational objectives.
  • Maintain accurate operational records, inspection logs, and maintenance documentation.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Experience operating and maintaining steam boilers, hot water boilers, HVAC systems, chillers, refrigeration equipment, and central plant mechanical systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills related to boilers, chillers, pumps, HVAC controls, and mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of building automation systems and computerized control systems.
  • Understanding of water treatment processes and chemical treatment programs.
  • Ability to safely handle hazardous materials and comply with environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety procedures, environmental regulations, and facility operating standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, and operational documentation.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and respond effectively to emergency situations.
  • Ability to work overtime and scheduled holidays as required.
  • Ability to work within regulated healthcare or institutional environments.
  • Stable employment history demonstrating reliability and strong maintenance or plant operations experience.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical training, vocational education, or trade school certification in stationary engineering, HVAC, mechanical systems, or a related field preferred.

Work Experience

  • Experience as a Stationary Engineer, Boiler Operator, HVAC Plant Operator, Facilities Engineer, Power Plant Operator, Building Engineer, Central Utility Plant Technician, or similar role preferred.
  • Experience operating central plant mechanical systems in healthcare facilities, hospitals, psychiatric facilities, universities, industrial plants, correctional facilities, or large commercial buildings highly preferred.
  • Experience working with boilers, chillers, refrigeration systems, pumps, HVAC controls, and related mechanical equipment required.
  • Experience working in regulated environments and around hazardous materials preferred.
