Job Title:
Lab Manager - R&D/Product DVL Engineering
Join TE Connectivity's world-class Passive Optics organization as a Manager for the Optical Testing Laboratory. You will execute sophisticated optical testing protocols, manage advanced test equipment, and ensure product quality through comprehensive environmental and optical characterization testing, supporting the development of next‑generation optical connector systems for AI and hyperscale computing infrastructure.
Why This Role MattersAs optical connectivity becomes increasingly critical for AI and data center applications, rigorous testing and validation are essential. You will help ensure TE's optical products meet the highest performance standards, providing accurate, reliable test data that directly impacts product success in the marketplace.
Job Responsibilities- Execute comprehensive optical performance tests (Insertion Loss, Return Loss, O , PER, Beam Quality, Beam Pointing).
- Validate fiber‑optic connectors and assemblies using industry‑standard test methodologies.
- Analyze and interpret complex test results, identifying trends, anomalies, and performance characteristics.
- Create detailed test reports with statistical analysis and recommendations for engineering teams.
- Conduct HALT/HASS protocols and environmental validation (temperature cycling, humidity exposure, vibration, mechanical stress) per TIA, EIA, and GIR standards.
- Ensure all testing procedures comply with TIA/EIA fiber‑optic standards and GIR.
- Document and analyze test failures to support root‑cause analysis and design improvements.
- Operate and maintain optical test equipment, including OSA, power meters, OTDR/OFDR, imaging systems, and automated test systems.
- Execute calibration procedures and maintain calibration standards for all test equipment.
- Perform precision cleaning, inspection, and preparation of fiber‑optic connectors and test samples.
- Develop and maintain test scripts to automate data collection, reduce testing time, and improve measurement repeatability.
- Apply statistical methods to analyze test results, calculate process capability, and identify performance trends.
- Support development of new test procedures and validate test methodologies.
- Continuously improve laboratory processes, test efficiency, and measurement accuracy.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to understand test requirements and provide technical testing expertise.
- BS degree in Electronics Technology, Engineering Technology, or related field (or equivalent technical experience); alternatively 6 years with a MS or 3 years with a PhD.
- Minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination).
- Familiarity with TIA/EIA fiber‑optic standards and Generic Industry Requirements (GIR) for optical testing.
- Hands‑on experience with optical test equipment and fiber‑optic connector handling procedures.
- Proficiency with Insertion Loss, Return Loss, O , and PER measurement techniques and interpretation.
- Experience with HALT/HASS testing procedures and environmental test chamber operations.
- Skilled operation of optical power meters, spectrum analyzers, OTDRs, and automated test systems.
- Understanding of statistical methods for test data analysis and process control.
- Knowledge of measurement standards, calibration procedures, and traceability requirements.
- Understanding of fiber‑optic connector types, cleaning procedures, and best practices.
- Experience with scripting languages (Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW) for test automation and data collection.
- Familiarity with laboratory quality management and documentation procedures.
- Attention to detail and meticulous approach to testing procedures.
- Systematic troubleshooting of test equipment issues and measurement anomalies.
- Clear communication of test procedures and results to engineering and manufacturing teams.
- Proactive continuous improvement mindset.
- Fiber‑optic certification (CFOT, CPCT) or electronics technician certification.
- Background in telecommunications, data center, or optical component testing environments.
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or other test automation programming languages.
- Experience with specialized optical tests (spectral characterization, modal analysis, high‑speed measurements).
- Laboratory management experience with LIMS and quality documentation systems.
