The Opportunity

Tetra Tech is seeking an Environmental Project Manager for our Environmental Compliance, Investigation, and Remediation team based in Upstate New York (Buffalo, Rochester, or Syracuse, NY).

Position Summary

Responsibilities of this position will include interpretation of federal, state, and local agency regulations. The role also involves analysis, oversight, and review of project work products such as site‑specific technical data, calculations, technical reports, construction plans, cost estimates, environmental permit applications, and permit terms and conditions. These responsibilities are applied to the civil, environmental, and remediation industries. On‑site work and short‑term travel may be required.

The position will also involve building client relationships, supporting new business development activities such as proposal preparation, and assisting with cross‑selling opportunities.

Essential Job Functions
  • Interpret federal, state, and local agency regulations
  • Assess potential environmental impacts and challenges
  • Scope and direct the project, including leadership of project teams
  • Analyze data and review project work products, including site‑specific technical data, calculations, technical reports, cost estimates, environmental permit applications, and permit terms and conditions
  • Conduct investigations and/or remediation of active or orphan sites (USEPA Superfund or New York State Superfund)
  • Perform on‑site work and travel as required
  • Build client relationships and support new client business development activities, including proposal scoping and preparation
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and help direct work for multi‑project clients
  • Support strategic initiatives for continued work with key clients and business sectors
  • Maintain quality control on projects and administrative tasks
  • Work independently to perform project tasks, design, calculations, and reporting to meet project specific requirements
  • Act as a point of contact for clients and maintain positive client relationships
  • Manage multiple smaller company priorities and projects
  • Work at landfills, contaminated sites, and/or other sites where heavy equipment, contamination, or other health hazards may exist; travel to short‑duration projects as needed
  • Assist with proposals, including development of technical plans, schedules, and cost estimates, and preparation with staff and the client
  • Possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills with the ability to think and act critically and strategically
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or above in engineering, geology, or a related environmental field
  • Professional Engineer or Professional Geology license, or ability to acquire within one year of hire
  • 5 to 10 years minimum of experience in a related field, including environmental consulting, environmental compliance, site investigation and remediation
  • Experience with NYSDEC regulatory requirements (NYCDEP experience a plus)
  • Project management experience, including budgets and invoicing
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills
  • Self‑disciplined, motivated, and able to work well in a team environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Project)
  • Experience with NYS Brownfields (BCP and/or BOA) is a plus
  • Established client relationships are a plus
Preferred Qualifications
  • New York regulatory experience is a plus
  • Experience with Civil 3D is preferred
  • Established client relationships are a plus
  • Project management experience (including budgets and invoicing) is a plus
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to sit and work at a computer for extended periods; occasional standing and walking within the office environment
  • Occasionally required to lift/move up to 10 lbs, with infrequent lifting up to 25 lbs
  • Requires use of hands for typing, handling materials, and operating office equipment; vision abilities include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • May occasionally travel to field sites (approximately 10–30% of the time), which can involve walking on uneven terrain and slopes up to 2:1 or 3:1 grade
