Position: Environmental Impact Specialist I
Location: City of Rochester

Duties Description

The Environmental Specialist 1/Environmental Specialist Trainee 1/Environmental Specialist Trainee 2 duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide technical expertise and assistance in a variety of assignments related to environmental impacts on transportation projects and programs;
  • Topics may include:
  • Cultural Resources-Section 106/14.09
    - Section 4(f)
  • Water Ecology
  • Asbestos and Contaminated Material
  • Air Quality
  • Prepare reports, mitigation plans, specifications, and assist design squads to meet regulatory requirements for capital projects;
  • Use GIS to identify and evaluate environmental resource issues related to proposed transportation projects;
  • Perform field work to collect necessary resource information to evaluate a project’s resource impacts;
  • Prepare project level correspondence and reports for coordination with involved state and federal regulatory agencies, and secure all necessary approvals and permits;
  • Review consultant wetland, asbestos, noise, cultural resource, etc. reports and make recommendations to project managers;
  • Provide guidance during preliminary and final design to meet NEPA, SEQRA, and other environmental regulations;
  • Review project plans and include appropriate environmental items in contract documents;
  • Assist with the implementation of the Region’s MS4 outfall inspection program;
  • Promote the Department’s environmental ethic through implementation of environmental initiatives that ensure projects and other actions are conducted in an environmentally sound manner that meet regulatory requirements;
  • The duties of this position may require occasional travel. At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is required, or otherwise demonstrate the ability to meet the travel requirements of the position;
  • Attendance at training and other learning opportunities may be required to stay current and to enhance knowledge of Department and Regional policies and procedures and other design and environmental topics.
