Sr. Welding Manufacturing Engineer
We are seeking a Sr. Welding Manufacturing Engineer to lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of high-volume welded and fabricated products. The role will focus on translating product designs into robust, producible manufacturing processes, specifying welding procedures and fixtures, optimizing automated machinery, and ensuring compliance with GD&T and ASME standards. The ideal candidate will combine hands-on welding and fabrication expertise with strong mechanical design skills (Solid Works) and experience driving manufacturing efficiency at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead manufacturing engineering for high-volume fabricated structures, ensuring designs are optimized for cost, quality, and manufacturability.
- Develop, document, and maintain welding procedures, fixture designs, and assembly processes; collaborate with QA to ensure weld quality meets standards.
- Create and update Solid Works models and manufacturing drawings; apply GD&T to control form, fit, and function.
- Design, commission, and troubleshoot automated welding and assembly machinery; collaborate with controls and maintenance teams to improve uptime and cycle time.
- Define and enforce ASME and other applicable welding and fabrication standards across production.
- Perform root-cause analysis for manufacturing defects and implement corrective and preventive actions to drive product quality improvements.
- Lead DFM/A initiatives and provide technical support to suppliers and production teams during ramp-up of high-volume programs.
- Mentor and train production engineering and shop personnel on welding best practices, inspection methods, and process controls.
- Use data-driven methods to identify continuous improvement opportunities and support Lean initiatives to reduce cost and lead time.
- Participate in cross-functional product development reviews to ensure manufacturability and regulatory compliance early in the design cycle.
Qualifications
- BS or AS in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Welding Engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
- 7+ years experience in manufacturing engineering with a focus on welded and fabricated structures in high-volume production environments.
- Proven proficiency with Solid Works for part, assembly, and tooling design.
- Hands-on expertise with welding processes, welding procedure development, and weld inspection techniques.
- Strong knowledge and application of GD&T and mechanical drawing standards.
- Familiarity with ASME welding and fabrication codes and ability to apply standards to production and documentation.
- Experience designing or integrating automated welding and assembly machinery (robotic welding, fixturing, conveyor systems).
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills with experience in root cause analysis, FMEA, and corrective actions.
- Excellent communication skills and experience working cross-functionally with design, quality, production, and suppliers.
- Preferred:
Lean manufacturing experience and/or certifications. - Preferred:
Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification or equivalent welding credential.
