Energy Materials Corporation is seeking an engaged Photovoltaic Metrology Technician to help with ongoing characterizations and contribute to the development of future measurement methodologies and implementations for thin-film photovoltaic products at our Rochester, NY facility. This position will support the commercialization of perovskite-based solar modules for production on high-speed roll-to-roll coating and processing equipment.
REPORTS TO:Senior Scientist
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain off-the-shelf and custom-made photovoltaic testing and characterization equipment
- Participate in the testing, validation, planning, development, and implementation of various metrology solutions that help improve and maintain the performance of EMC’s high-efficiency photovoltaic products
- Contribute to developing, maintaining, and updating standard operating procedures of various metrology equipment and processes
- Provide equipment-related training to select personnel
- Work closely with cross-functional team of scientists and engineers to implement strategies for process qualification and process parameter control leading to optimal thin-film and photovoltaic properties
- Identify equipment and component requirements and assist with supplier selection
- Provide input on optimization of characterization for high-volume manufacturing processes
- Operate within and contribute to a fast-paced pre-production environment
- Demonstrated ability to accurately record and document measurement conditions and experimental results in a clear, reproducible manner consistent with metrology best practices
- Hands-on experience in a manufacturing or laboratory setting with a safety-first mindset
- Proficiency in spreadsheet applications (Excel or equivalent) for organizing measurement data, performing basic statistical analysis, and generating summary reports
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Eager to learn new skills and enthusiastic about renewable energy in general and solar energy in particular
- Driven, hands-on individual with strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work both independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment with ambitious goals and deadlines
- Understanding of photovoltaic device physics and familiarity with solar cell/module fabrication methods
- Hands-on experience with optical test and measurement equipment, such as spectrophotometers, ellipsometers, profilometers, or UV-Vis-NIR spectrometers, for thin film and photovoltaic device characterization
- Experience with PV module characterization methods, including I-V curve tracing, stabilized power output (SPO), electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) imaging, infrared (IR) thermography, or flash solar simulators for module-level performance testing
- Computer coding skills in Python, Matlab, Lab View or similar programming languages for work automation, data acquisition, and analysis
- Familiarity with IEC or ASTM standards related to PV module testing and qualification (e.g., IEC 61215, IEC 61646, IEC 61853)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in a physical science or engineering discipline, or 4+ years of directly relevant hands-on experience in lieu of a degree
- Two or more years of hands-on experience in device and materials characterization in an industrial, academic, or research environment
- Bending/twisting/pulling/pushing
- Manipulation and positioning of small delicate parts
- Lifting to 40 lbs
$70,000 to $95,000 depending on experience and education
