About the Role
The University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Optical Engineer to support laser operations through data analysis, technical evaluation, hands‑on testing, and system operation.
This role is well suited for an engineer with a strong background in optics and lasers who enjoys solving complex technical problems, working hands‑on with sophisticated equipment, and collaborating with scientists, engineers, and technicians.
The successful candidate must be willing to work evening shift assignments 1–2 times per week to support laser operations and testing schedules.
What You’ll Do
- Complete qualification and stand watch during operation of the OMEGA laser system
- Perform engineering analysis supporting laser development, system performance, operations, and safety
- Collect, process, and interpret technical data to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for performance improvement
- Conduct laboratory and field testing using oscilloscopes and other diagnostic equipment
- Support validation and verification activities through structured test plans and documentation
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and test plans for technicians and operators
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, technicians, and other cross‑functional teams
- Support laser upgrade projects and software development, with responsibility for defined project tasks under the direction of a project manager
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
, plus 3 years of relevant optics or laser experience - Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Experience working with lasers; experience with laser diodes preferred
- Experience with automated optical alignment processes, including pick‑and‑place or robotic equipment, preferably involving optical or semiconductor components
Required Skills and Experience
- Strong foundation in mathematics and physics with an analytical and inquisitive approach to problem‑solving
- Experience developing data collection and database interfaces and integrating data into manufacturing execution systems
- Experience modeling optical systems;
Zemax experience highly preferred - Ability to develop optical alignment tooling and procedures
- Demonstrated project experience involving optical systems
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics
- Hands‑on experience with oscilloscopes and electronic test equipment
- Experience with data analysis tools such as MATLAB, Python, Excel, or similar platforms
- Experience working in a laboratory or manufacturing environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness and ability to work evening shifts up to two times per week
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Adaptability and ability to manage shifting priorities and schedules
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $61,000–$85,400 annually
. Individual compensation will be determined within the range based on factors including market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise, and internal equity.
