Tax Specialist I
The Tax Department is relied upon by all facets of the organization including sales, new client implementation, client support and finance. The Tax Filing Service is responsible for Tax Deposits exceeding $40 billion annually and filing 800,000 tax returns. The Tax Compliance Team is primarily responsible for balancing the Payroll system to the Tax System and reconciling variances for new and existing customers.
The Tax Specialist I will demonstrate a basic understanding of root causes to notices in order to maintain a consistent closure at minimum of the designated quota, while learning basic tax knowledge and tax department processes and procedures. They will communicate with agencies directly to resolve or monitor progress of resolution, as well as provide detailed explanation to the clients regarding cause and resolution of the issue.
Responsibilities
- Promptly resolve client questions with a high level of service and communicate with them regarding tax activity, prior quarter balancing issues, amended returns, and tax jurisdiction correspondences.
- Identify and document problems and trends to recommend solutions that will eliminate known issues in the future.
- Review, balance, and prepare Amended Tax Returns.
- Read and understand basic tax documents (SUI Rates, Unpaid Liabilities, Informational)
- Reconcile Payroll Tax Reports and Tax Returns.
- Timely communicate information to internal partners (ie Account Managers) so the customer is up-to-date on actions being taken by multiple internal teams.
- Collaborate with internal teams to strengthen processes and deliverables.
- Keep up-to-date on the latest developments as they affect tax regulations and policies.
- Successful problem‑solving and de‑escalation of client concerns.
- Research and Resolve Payroll Tax Notices from Agencies by interacting directly with agencies, account managers, other Paylocity Tax departments, reviewing case/ticket notes in Salesforce, and client configurations in Master Tax and/or HR and Payroll.
- Request penalty abatements through government relations requests, or requests directly with Agency contacts.
- Demonstrate strong customer service skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required; a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Previous experience in Payroll, Accounting, or Tax Compliance field is strongly preferred.
- IRS Enrolled Agent Credentials, Certified Payroll Professional, or significant progress toward certification is highly desired.
- Ability to sit for extended periods:
The role requires sitting at a desk or workstation for long periods, typically 7‑8 hours a day. - Use of computer and phone systems:
The employee must be able to operate a computer, use phone systems, and type. This includes using multiple software programs and inquiries simultaneously.

The pay range for this position is $39,000 -$72,400/yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position offers a full range of benefits outlined here.
