Overview

As a Food Program Support Assistant, you will help advance this mission by supporting Trillium Health’s Food & Nutrition Services, including the food pantry, emergency food distribution, and related food programs. In this role, you will ensure a welcoming, client-focused, and barrier-free experience while contributing to daily operations that reduce food insecurity and strengthen community support.

Key Responsibilities Food Pantry Operations
  • Assist clients with shopping, applying quantity limits, bagging items, and offering nutrition information when appropriate.
  • Support daily food pantry operations including inventory, ordering, purchasing, unloading, stocking, and preparing food bags.
  • Maintains and models a client focused approach with the primary goal of “providing people food without barriers” and thereby addressing food insecurity and the social determinants of health.
  • Coordinate donated food pickups, including scheduling, retrieval, and maintaining relationships with donation sites.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers across supportive services and clinical teams to meet individual client food needs.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the food pantry, storage areas, and program kitchen, complete routine and periodic deep cleaning tasks.
  • Ensure proper sanitation, handling, storage, and delivery of food in accordance with local health codes.
  • Provide patient-focused, judgment-free, solution-oriented customer service to reduce barriers related to food insecurity.
  • Promote Trillium Health services and assess food pantry clients’ connections to medical and primary care; provide linkages as needed.
Program Support
  • Demonstrate developing knowledge of HIV/AIDS, food insecurity, nutrition, trauma-informed care, and related issues.
  • Drive agency vehicles, including a box truck and 13-seat passenger van.
  • Maintain Food Safety Certification (training provided) and other required certifications.
  • Responsible for maintaining confidentiality of all patient, client, employee, protected and proprietary information.
  • Meet the performance standards of the department and must participate as requested in compliance audits, process improvement and quality improvement plans.
  • Attend team meetings, training, and learning opportunities for best practice.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Food Safety Certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Preferred:
    Experience in nonprofit work or program coordination.
  • Requires effective and efficient communication, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to relate to individuals of diverse backgrounds, identities, and cultures.
  • Valid NYS Driver License and ability to meet agency driving requirements.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks including walking with clients, stocking shelves, and lifting boxes.
  • Some flexibility with scheduling required.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this role, the employee may need to stand, sit, walk, use hands, reach, talk, and hear. Occasional stooping, bending, and lifting/moving up to 50 lbs. may be required. Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This job description reflects essential functions under the ADA.
