Duties Description

Job duties include:

  • Assess individuals under Article 15 MHL to determine if criteria are met for involuntary, non-objecting, or voluntary retention.
  • Work with the courts to provide expert testimony when required.
  • Collaborate with the court, AAG, MHLS, psychiatry providers, families, and treatment teams to ensure a continuum of care and a strong support system for patients.
  • Supervise unlicensed psychologists and social workers on treatment plans, individual and group therapy, Risk Assessments, and Higher Risk BSPs.
  • Oversee staff trainings and provide consultation for staff and clinicians on the units.
  • Provide assessments, counseling, and specialized therapy to individuals on caseload as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with 483 Regulations.
  • Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team; participate in team meetings, present clinical information and observations, and provide consultation, training, and assistance to staff in other disciplines; coordinate care and treatment planning for individuals.
  • Provide staff and clinician training on CPL statuses, forensic topics, and other pertinent topics related to challenging behaviors/ psychiatric diagnoses.
  • Create curriculum and oversee competency and restoration groups as well as other therapeutic groups.
  • Participate in complex assessments and/or review clinical documentation to confirm both diagnostic and behavioral needs of people with /DD.
  • Professionally and ethically complete treatment planning and documentation requirements in a timely manner.
  • Participate in Psychology Department activities and local agency committees as well as Central Office committees as requested.
  • Assist Chief or Principal Psychologist in providing clinical supervision or fulfillment of other administrative tasks as assigned.
  • May teach New Employee Orientation classes on psychology related topics.
  • Serve as psychological examiner for evaluations where a licensed practitioner is required (competency, surrogate decision making, involuntary admission, etc.).
  • Maintain professional licensure and continuing education and training requirements.
  • May involve some travel for training purposes and for screening new admissions.
Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be licensed and currently registered by New York State as a Licensed Psychologist.

Additional Comments

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). HELPS Program titles may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment. This means that you do not need to take an exam to qualify, but you do need to meet the minimum qualifications of the title. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their permanent non‑competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status.

You will not have to take an exam to gain permanent competitive status.

  • Posted Hiring Salary includes the sum of statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 25 ($96,336), Increased hiring rate ($25,077), and Geographic Pay Differential ($20,000). The Geographic Pay Differential is also applied to the posted Job Rate ($121,413).
  • If you are currently a New York State employee serving in a permanent competitive qualifying title and eligible for a transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law, you may be appointed to this title as a permanent competitive employee.
  • The assignment of PS&T employees will be made in accordance with any agreed upon Memorandum of Understanding between PEF and the local DDSO regarding the posting of job vacancies.
