Overview

The University of Rochester School of Nursing (SON), in partnership with the NCI Designated Wilmot Cancer Institute (Wilmot), seeks an inspirational leader with a distinguished record of research excellence and national prominence in oncology nursing to serve as the Inaugural Jean

E. Johnson Chair in Nursing Oncology.

Since 1925, the SON has been at the forefront of education, research, and practice—preparing nurses to lead, innovate, and care with compassion. The SON became known nationally for advancing the Unification Model and was among the earliest schools to establish master’s and doctoral programs in nursing, cementing research as a cornerstone of the mission. The SON is among the top 32 nursing schools in NIH funding, and it received $5.5 million in research funding from all sources in 2024.

The newly endowed chair represents a significant investment during a pivotal period of growth for SON, Wilmot, and the University of Rochester Medical Center. The position is made possible through a generous gift from Dr. Jean

E. Johnson, an eminent and groundbreaking nurse researcher. Johnson was a pioneer in oncology nursing research, whose theory of self-regulation focused on stress and coping with physical illness for patients with cancer.

The SON seeks a distinguished Associate or Full Professor (with tenure) with expertise and accomplishments in oncology nursing research. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent research-focused doctorate and demonstrate a sustained record of extramural funding as principal investigator in oncology nursing research. The ideal candidate is a recognized scholar, mentor, and academic leader whose accomplishments merit appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or higher at the University of Rochester.

Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York is required.

The pay range for this position is Associate Professor $175,000 – $200,000. The referenced pay range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience, and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries.
