Function of Position:

The Software Technology Assistance Center (STAC), located in the Brighton Library, supports Monroe Community College students and employees with software technology instruction, troubleshooting, and skill development. STAC student workers, known as "STACers," are often the first point of contact for people seeking assistance and play an important role in creating a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment. This job pays the current New York State minimum wage with hours based on student availability and center needs.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Welcomes students and employees to STAC in a friendly, professional, and approachable manner.
  • Provides patient, one-on-one assistance to users with a wide range of technology experience, confidence levels, learning styles, and needs.
  • Helps students and employees use software and web-based systems related to coursework, teaching, learning, and college work.
  • Explains technology clearly and respectfully, adapting the pace, language, and level of detail to the individual user.
  • Guides users through tasks so they can build their own technology skills rather than simply completing the work for them.
  • Troubleshoots common software and general technology problems and helps users identify practical next steps or solutions.
  • Remains calm, flexible, and patient when working with users who may be frustrated, anxious, unfamiliar with technology, or unsure how to describe a problem.
  • Works collaboratively with other STACers and Learning Resources staff and knows when to ask for help or refer an issue to someone with additional expertise.
  • Helps maintain an organized, positive, and service-oriented environment in the STAC area.
  • Learns new software, procedures, and technology skills as needed and adapts to changing support needs.
  • Other duties as assigned by Learning Resources.

Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled Monroe Community College student in good academic standing.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a genuine interest in helping others.
  • Warm, welcoming, dependable, and professional when interacting with students and employees.
  • Strong patience and adaptability when assisting people with different backgrounds, communication styles, and technology skill levels.
  • Clear verbal communication skills and the ability to explain steps without making users feel rushed or uncomfortable.
  • Comfortable learning new technology and working through unfamiliar problems.
  • Ability to work independently when appropriate while also functioning as part of a team.
  • Willingness to ask questions, seek help, and refer users when an issue is beyond the STACer's current knowledge or access.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in customer service, tutoring, peer support, teaching, or another role involving direct assistance to others.
  • Comfort with commonly used productivity, academic, creative, or collaboration software.
  • Interest in technology, problem-solving, and helping others become more confident technology users.
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish or other languages proficiently.
Additional Information:

Pay Rate: $16/hour

Hours per week: 10-20 hours.
