Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Processes requests for interpreting services, communicating with requestors and consumers to clarify needs. Assesses the most appropriate fit between interpreters and assignments to optimize service.
- Serves as liaison to other university departments and external agencies regarding the provision of interpreting service.
- Provides interpreting services to high visibility assignments and emergency calls. Performs a broad range of assignments to keep abreast of campus access service needs and provides consumer support.
- Responds to and addresses consumer issues/problems/concerns with services and refers issues requiring further intervention to the manager.
- Provides support to the manager by collecting, generating, and analyzing data regarding service needs and service provision.
- Mentors developing staff members and makes recommendations to the manager regarding professional development activities for skill growth.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of the role and function in postsecondary interpreting.
- Knowledge of the Code of Professional Conduct of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
- Skill in the provision of interpreting service in a broad variety of settings.
- Skill in written, spoken, and signed communication.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and Access Services Database System (ASDS) at an intermediate level.
- Ability to collaborate and work within a team environment.
- Associate's degree in a related field.
- 4 years of relevant experience.
- Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
- Currently assessed as a level 3 Interpreter or beyond.
Operations, Administrative, Service, or Technical Support Level 3 - Senior level role with considerable knowledge and skills. Performs complex tasks and project work. Work is typically not routine and requires troubleshooting and analysis. Mentors or guides less experienced staff.
The Academic and Non-Academic Coordinators of interpreting services coordinate the provision of interpreting service within their respective areas of responsibility, provide model interpreting services in a broad range of challenging assignments, and lead professional development and projects at both the team and department level.
The Academic and Non-Academic Coordinators of interpreting services are primarily responsible for the screening of requests and scheduling of services for a team of 30 staff and 25 freelance interpreters who provide approximately 18,500 hours of service each academic year. The Coordinator serves as primary point of contact between consumers and interpreters and facilitates their collaboration. The Coordinator works to find the most appropriate fit between interpreters, assignments, and consumers.
