Apollo also provides prototype optical components and system assemblies to help customers move efficiently from concept to production. In addition, the team produces polymer injection molded optical components and assemblies, enabling scalable, cost-effective manufacturing.

Team members collaborate closely with customers to solve complex optical challenges and bring new products to market.

Role Description The Tool Maker is a full-time role based in Rochester NY. Day-to-day responsibilities include building, repairing, and maintaining molds, dies, and tooling used in optical component manufacturing. The Tool Maker will read and interpret technical drawings, set up and operate manual and CNC machines, and ensure parts meet tight tolerances and quality standards. The role involves inspecting tooling, troubleshooting issues on the production floor, and collaborating with engineers and production staff to improve tool performance and manufacturing efficiency.

The Tool Maker will also support preventive maintenance activities, document work performed, and follow all safety and quality procedures.

Qualifications

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with precision machining, including operation of manual mills, lathes, grinders, and CNC equipment.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and CAD models, with the ability to work to tight tolerances and specifications.
  • Knowledge of mold and die construction, assembly, and repair, ideally in environments involving plastics or polymer injection molding.
  • Experience with measurement tools such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other inspection equipment to verify part accuracy and quality.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, shop safety practices, and basic preventive maintenance for tools and machinery.
  • Effective problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to identify root causes of tooling issues and implement practical solutions.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineers, technicians, and production team members, and communicate clearly in both written and verbal forms.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a toolmaking apprenticeship, technical certificate, or associate degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Prior experience as a Tool Maker, Machinist, or similar role in a manufacturing or optical production environment is beneficial.
  • Willingness to work on-site in America, IA in a hybrid capacity and adapt to evolving production needs and priorities.
