Nursing Home, Charge Nurse, Director of Nursing
Salary Range: $80,000–$95,000 (pay will vary depending upon relevant experience for the position)
Schedule: Monday‑Friday 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm (NO WEEKENDS!)
Description: The shift supervisor is responsible for translating the objectives, policies and procedures of the Jewish Home and nursing department into effective action while maintaining standards of nursing care and practice during the assigned shift.
Key Responsibilities- Management of the Provision of Nursing Services:
- Initiate internal investigations for resident care issues.
- Receive and give facility shift report. Make unit rounds to assess resident care and staff needs.
- Determine optimal utilization of staff for nursing service delivery and procure additional staff when indicated.
- Obtain medications and/or supplies for resident nursing care.
- Work collaboratively with the nurse manager of each unit to maintain continuity of resident care.
- Maintain a safe environment for residents and staff consistent with established policies and procedures.
- Consistently monitor the quality of care provided to residents on assigned shifts.
- Support and participate in ongoing educational and research programs of the nursing department and the Jewish Home.
- Maintain close working relationships with other departments providing support services to residents during the shift.
- Serve as the facility spokesperson during the assigned shift.
- Individual Resident Care Management:
- Assess and evaluate changes in the health status of residents.
- Develop and implement an interim plan of care in consultation with the physician when appropriate.
- Communicate changes in resident status to appropriate persons and places.
- Personnel Management on Assigned Shift:
- Make recommendations to the VP of Nursing Services or Assistant Director of Nursing regarding staffing needs and patterns.
- Complete performance evaluations of assigned staff and review evaluations with individual staff.
- Work with the staffing coordinator to ensure appropriate staffing patterns.
- Assist new staff members in the adjustment process and facilitate an appropriate orientation program.
- Evaluate individual capabilities of each staff member and take appropriate action if discrepancy between capability and performance is recognized.
- Identify problems and provide appropriate counseling, instruction or experience; authorize disciplinary action when indicated.
- Act as the primary clinical nursing resource for nursing staff on the assigned shift.
- Perform all other job duties as assigned.
- Current NYS Professional Registered Nurse License.
- Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, laws, regulations, and guidelines related to long‑term care.
- Leadership and supervisory ability and willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non‑professional personnel.
- Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures necessary for providing quality care.
- Willingness to seek out new methods and principles and to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
Three (3) years of clinical experience in long‑term care nursing preferred (acute care acceptable). Previous leadership responsibilities.
