The Center for Advanced Research Technologies (CART) connects investigators with state-of-the-art instrumentation, specialized scientific expertise, and data analysis support that would be difficult for individual laboratories to maintain independently. Serving investigators across the University of Rochester and collaborators worldwide, CART provides access to advanced genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, imaging, flow cytometry, bioinformatics, and other cutting-edge technologies.

About the Role

The Research Specialist is a key contributor to our core lab, performing essential sample preparation procedures including nucleic acid extraction, quantification and library preparation, ensuring high-quality, reproducible data for our research community. Beyond technical execution, the Research Specialist helps to optimize laboratory workflows, troubleshoot instrumentation, maintain meticulous quality records, and train incoming lab members.

Key Responsibilities

Sample Preparation & Workflow Execution
:
Perform nucleic acid extraction, QC, and library preparation for next-generation sequencing (NGS), single-cell genomics, spatial omics, and related applications while maintaining detailed quality documentation.

Instrumentation Management & Technical Troubleshooting
:
Operate, monitor, and maintain sequencing instruments, automated liquid handlers, and QC platforms; evaluate run quality metrics, troubleshoot technical issues, and coordinate vendor maintenance.

Method Optimization & Process Improvement
:
Assist in evaluating and implementing emerging genomic technologies and automation, while developing, standardizing, and optimizing protocols to maximize efficiency, data quality, and resource utilization.

Requires: Bachelor's degree and 2 years related work experience, providing direct assistance to researchers

Prefer:

  • Experience with tissue culture, primary culture, and/or animal handling
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing, single-cell genomics, spatial transcriptomics, or other advanced molecular genomics technologies
