Coordinator Of Environmental Programming
The Coordinator of Environmental Programming is responsible for managing the operational, administrative, and educational functions of the Maplewood Nature Center. They also coordinate the City of Rochester's Connecting Children to Nature Initiatives and work with community partners to promote environmental programs. The employee in this position exercises both direct and indirect supervision over full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff. Direct supervision is received from the Director of Programs and Park Stewardship.
Performs related work as required. City residency will be required within one year of hire. Competitive Class position.
- Manages and leads the development of environmental education and outdoor recreation programs for youth and adults;
- Oversees maintenance of the facility, interpretive landscape, and grounds and coordinates with other City departments and staff to ensure proper maintenance;
- Coordinates City's Connecting Children to Nature initiatives and liaises with various community partners to expand the reach of the City's environmental programs and promote the Maplewood Nature Center;
- Maintains staff schedules, assigns work, and provides training in the delivery of environmental programs at the Maplewood Nature Center and R-Centers;
- Supports staff by consistently educating and advising on City rules, regulations, policies and procedures and encouraging creative thinking and participatory decision making;
- Coordinates interpretive displays and exhibits;
- Establishes and nurtures positive working relationships with City colleagues and personnel, partner organizations, the Rochester City School District, and residents/community members;
- Evaluates programs on an ongoing basis by observing sessions, talking to participants and staff, monitoring participation, and conducting surveys;
- Responds to customer service inquiries over the phone, in person, or in written correspondence.
High school diploma or equivalent, PLUS either I, II, III, or IV.: I. Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geology, Anthropology, Biology, or other related field AND one (1) year of full-time experience (or part-time equivalent) in conducting, instructing, or overseeing horticulture or environmental education programs OR experience in ornamental horticulture and landscape installation and maintenance; II. Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geology, Anthropology, Biology, or other related field AND three (3) years of full-time experience (or part-time equivalent) as described in I.;
III. Associate's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geology, Anthropology, Biology, or other related field AND five (5) years of full-time experience (or part-time equivalent) as described in I.; IV. Seven (7) years of full-time experience (or part-time equivalent) as described in I. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
New York State Driver's License at time of appointment and maintained throughout employment in this title.
