Installation Technician, Telecoms Engineering
Position Overview
We are seeking skilled Low Voltage / Fiber Optic Technician to support a major data center build project. This role involves installing, terminating, labeling, testing, and troubleshooting low‑voltage copper and fiber cabling. Candidates must be reliable, safety‑minded, and experienced in structured cabling within construction or data center environments.
Key Responsibilities- Cabling, Installation, & Termination
- Perform pretermination procedures including organizing, dressing, forming, and labeling cables
- Determine proper cable length and slack requirements
- Pull and route fiber optic cable and copper cabling
- Terminate copper (CAT3, CAT5/5e, CAT6) and fiber
- Install work area outlets, faceplates, and surface mount boxes
- Complete IDC terminations (110/66 blocks, patch panels)
- Mount and install backboards, racks, cross‑connects, fiber hardware, and patch panels
- Install grounding for equipment, racks, and cable
- Cable Support & Pathway Work
- Install and properly support cable using cable tray, J‑hooks, bridal rings, D‑rings, and trapeze supports
- Testing & Troubleshooting
- Perform Fluke testing (required)
- Conduct continuity tests for horizontal & riser cabling
- Use volt‑ohm meters and test sets
- Identify and troubleshoot opens, shorts, crosses, transposed pairs
- Identify active voice/data circuits
- Use tone sets for tracing and verification
- Documentation & Leadership
- Complete all project paperwork accurately (timesheets, transfers, work orders, change orders, etc.)
- Follow all labeling standards and installation guidelines
- Provide guidance and on‑the‑job training to team members when needed
- Coordinate personnel, timelines, and task completion
- Communicate professionally with customers and field leadership
- Experience pulling fiber optic cable
- Experience with Fluke testing equipment
- Experience terminating copper and fiber
- Experience dressing and organizing cable (highly preferred)
- Ability to read and interpret labels, blueprints, and cable identifiers
- Strong communication skills
- Dependable and punctual
- Ability to work from ladders, lifts, and in confined spaces
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and move up to 75 lbs
- Ability to clearly distinguish color codes
- Ability to travel within local territory as needed
- Must pass drug test and BGC
- Completion of required onsite training modules (provided)
- Onsite at a construction/data center project
- Fast‑paced, physical work environment
- PPE required (provided)
This is a Contract position based out of Rochester, NY.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $27.00/hr eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
