Position: Facilities Operations Assistant 1
Location: City of Rochester

Description

Under the supervision of a higher‑level maintenance/custodial position or the Superintendent/Manager, the Facilities Operations Assistant 1 performs various custodial and facilities maintenance responsibilities. This position primarily focuses on painting work, including preparing surfaces and applying coats of paint, varnish, and other finishes to protect interior or exterior surfaces and fixtures of buildings, structures, furniture, equipment, and materials. The assistant also assists with tasks typical of various trade specialties such as carpentry, mechanical, electrical, motor equipment, or painting.

Responsibilities
  • Perform general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, mowing lawns, cutting brush and wood, trimming and removing trees and shrubs, maintaining roads and sidewalks, snow and ice removal, and collecting trash and obstructions around the building.
  • Perform general facilities maintenance including cleaning common areas, offices and restrooms, painting, and moving furniture.
  • Maintain automotive equipment and other machinery.
  • Ensure overall facility operations meet health and safety standards.
  • Assist with maintenance requirements for the Nonmilitary Use Program when applicable.
  • Use computers for basic record‑keeping such as timesheets, work orders, calendaring, and data entry.
  • Demonstrate reliability and trustworthiness.
  • Complete required training and attend additional training as needed.
  • Perform periodic overtime and travel when required for training or other duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
  • Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment and materials of the assigned trade safely, effectively, and efficiently.
  • Ability to work comfortably at heights such as climbing ladders, working on scaffolds, platforms and lifts.
  • Ability to push, pull, lift and carry heavy objects and equipment (50+ lbs).
  • Ability to work in confined spaces in accordance with requirements.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying temperatures and inclement weather for extended periods.
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle, other motorized equipment and a variety of light mechanized construction equipment.
Qualifications

Applicants must be physically able to perform moderate to heavy physical labor and meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Minimum age 18 years.
  • Valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of New York; must report changes to supervisory chain and State Human Resources (MNHS).
  • Required to acquire and maintain a military driver’s license if operating military vehicles and equipment per NGB standards.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and preferably with a crew on maintenance or construction projects.
  • Ability to work comfortably at heights, push/pull/lift heavy objects, work in confined spaces, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate and maintain tools, machinery and equipment required for the assigned craft.
  • Within 90 days of receiving computer access, complete all training associated with assigned data systems such as SFS, GFEBS, SLMS, and related computer training.
  • Obtain and maintain a favorable background investigation and possess the appropriate clearance, such as a National Agency Check with Inquiry (NACI) and potentially a SECRET clearance.
  • Maintain minimum standards per agency, statutory and NGB requirements and directives; failure to do so may result in disciplinary action or termination.
Additional Comments

This position is not within the Classified Service of New York State but is covered under New York State Military Law. If selected, current Civil Service employees will lose their seniority within the Classified Service, thereby exempting them from applying for promotional exams within Civil Service.

Current Start Rate: $36,232
* Job Rate: $44,828

(All hires begin at “Start Rate” unless prior state experience affords eligibility for a hiring step increase as determined by OSC.)
