Location: City of Rochester

Rochester Psychiatric Center (RPC) an Office of Mental Health (OMH) Joint Commission-accredited hospital, is currently recruiting for its physical plant operations. Shift positions are available for Tuesday – Saturday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, with pass days being Sunday/Monday.

Plant Utilities Engineers at RPC are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the physical plant. Our Plant Utility Engineers help support hope and recovery for adults with serious mental illness and children and adolescents with serious emotional disturbances.

Plant Utilities Engineers at RPC:

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, test, and calibrate mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical distribution.
  • Operate computers that control boilers, electronic equipment, and HVAC systems.
  • Run tests on boilers, HVAC, and water systems to ensure equipment is functioning.
  • Respond to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and environmental safety concerns.
  • Monitor air temperature, humidity, and freshness in buildings.
  • Please note:

    Individuals must be able to wear a respirator mask and climb ladders to perform job maintenance tasks.

RPC, a Joint Commission-accredited Office of Mental Health (OMH) facility, provides inpatient and outpatient treatment and rehabilitation to adults who have been diagnosed with serious mental illness, residential and community support programs to children and adolescents diagnosed with serious emotional disturbances, and inpatient treatment to individuals who are currently involved with the Criminal Justice System. Minimum Qualifications
  • Either 1. Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force;
  • Or 2. Must have been an enlisted machinery technician (MK) with the U.S. Coast Guard OR possession of a certificate as a Marine Engineer issued by the U.S. Coast Guard;
  • Or 3. Must have been an enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army;
  • Or 4. Must have been an enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator, reactor control, utilities man, machinist mate, or engineman with the U.S. Navy;
  • Or 5. Must have a Merchant Mariner’s Document (MMD) and have been a qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer or engineman with the U.S. Merchant Marine;
  • Or 6. Completion of a New York State Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers, plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC Mechanic or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC) ;
  • Or 7. Possession of a High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License;
  • Or 8. A bachelor’s degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering;
  • Or 9. Four years of full-time hands‑on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facility, computer applications of digital energy platforms and building analytics and/or performing diagnosis, repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment;
  • Or 10. Four years of full-time hands‑on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment;
  • Or 11. An associate’s degree in HVAC and two years of qualifying experience as described in either qualification #9 or #10 ;
  • Or 12. Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours) or completion of an approved certificate in HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler…
