Position: Community Intervention Specialist (C)
Location: City of Rochester

This position is assigned to the Mayor's Office, Office of Violence Prevention whose primary objective is to interact with and counsel individuals who are at-risk or suspected of participating in criminal behavior in order to discourage criminal behavior, discuss positive alternatives and opportunities. Related work is performed as required.

Overview
  • Interacts with and counsels individuals who are at-risk or suspected of participating in criminal behavior in order to discourage criminal behavior, discuss positive alternatives and opportunities;

  • Assists in mediating high-level street conflicts, and referring and guiding selected residents through the processes of social, behavioral, educational, employment, and other various support services, etc.;

  • Provides direct intervention to disruptive situations;

  • Develops relationships for the purposes of referral with service delivery providers, particularly education, behavioral health and employment, and training agencies and resources;

  • Initiates referrals to various community-based services and professionals;

  • Communicates with co-workers assigned to the Violence Prevention Services Unit units regarding arising situations;

  • Writes reports regarding daily interventions and contacts;

  • May visit homes referred by police officers, probation officers, parents, schools, neighbors, or other sources to assess home situation and parent and sibling relationships;

  • Attends meetings regarding programs and community initiatives;

  • Other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or Equivalent;
AND two (2) years of violence prevention/intervention (interruption) experience.

Special Requirements

Possession of a current valid NYS Class D Operator’s license.

The license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
