Senior Software Engineer NAVWAR

Opportunity

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will contribute to implementing technical solutions for Navigation Warfare and related technologies. Your role will involve research and development efforts to implement new features, execute platform integrations, and ensure the validation and verification of system performance. You will collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams to deliver robust, high‑quality systems. This position reports to the Software Engineering Manager, based in our Rochester, NY office.

Safran Federal Systems provides Resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (R‑PNT) solutions and custom engineering services to U.S. Government agencies, defense organizations and their contractors. Safran Federal Systems is authorized to work on the full spectrum of U.S. Government classified and unclassified projects, in addition to supporting strategic partnerships for key defense PNT technologies.

• Develop software for high‑performance navigation warfare systems.
• Validate, test, and document new or existing codebases.
• Communicate with sensors and other hardware systems, including low‑latency and precision time applications.
• Optimize code for deployment on devices with constrained computing power and storage.
• Provide on‑site technical expertise during system deployments, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
• Work proactively, structured, and analytically to solve problems.
• Collaborate closely with a small team of specialists where teamwork is key to our success.

• Minimum of 4 years of experience in software development or aerospace engineering.
• Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) in Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related accredited engineering discipline.
• Experience with modern C/C++, Qt, Linux, networking protocols, and Python.
• Experience with Git, Git Lab, or equivalent source‑control and CI/CD tools.
• Experience with software architecture, open architecture, and software design.
• Preferred experience with GNSS receivers, SDRs, and other navigation systems/sensors.
• Preferred experience building latency‑sensitive systems, with a strong grasp of low‑level performance factors such as memory management, CPU cache behavior, concurrency, and network I/O optimization.
• Preferred experience working with digital hardware (flashers, JTAG, oscilloscopes, etc.).
• Excellent presentation and communication skills; ability to speak to senior military and staff personnel and to pivot between presentation and dialogue.
• Strong customer focus, ownership, urgency, and drive; adaptability to new technologies.
• Self‑motivated and able to self‑prioritize effectively to achieve goals in ambiguous situations.
• Secret‑level security clearance required or the ability to obtain it within one year of hire preferred.
• U.S. citizenship required.

The position requires occasional movement around the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, and other equipment, and the ability to remain in a stationary position about 50% of the time.
