General Definition of WorkThe High School English Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and standards-based instruction in English Language Arts, including literature, writing, grammar, and communication skills. The teacher fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a love of reading while supporting the academic and social development of all students.

Essential Functions- Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional lessons aligned with state standards and district curriculum.
- Teach a variety of English courses, such as literature, composition, and language arts.
- Develop students’ reading comprehension, writing proficiency, and analytical skills.
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including students with varying abilities and backgrounds.
- Assess and evaluate student progress through assignments, tests, essays, and projects.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and communicate progress with parents/guardians.
- Create a positive, structured, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Incorporate technology and instructional strategies to enhance learning.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance.
- Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and support staff to improve student outcomes.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school-related activities.
- Uphold school policies, procedures, and expectations for student behavior.
- Exceptional knowledge of the needs of students.
- Knowledge needed to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and to speak effectively with secondary-aged students and/or employees in a school environment.
- Knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of effective and innovative instructional and student evaluation techniques.
- Strong skills in classroom management, collaboration, and differentiated instruction.
- Strong communication skills with students, staff, administration, and the public.
- Skills in understanding a child’s behavior and dynamics.
- Skilled in problem solving and patience.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
- Ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work and effectively attend to students.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Application of percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations is required.
- South Carolina certification in Secondary English.
- Experience with differentiated instruction and inclusive teaching practices.
- Familiar with educational technology tools.
- Strong classroom management skills and a growth-oriented mindset.
- Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
- May be required to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings.
- Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results must be provided.
