General Definition of Work

Rock Hill Workforce and Development/Adult Education is seeking a part-time ESL Teacher to provide high-quality English as a Second Language instruction to adult learners across morning and evening class blocks. This role supports learners in developing English language proficiency for daily life, employment, civic engagement, and further education, consistent with RHWDAE's mission of Transforming Lives Through Education, Employment, and Opportunity.

Salary/Status

$25.00 an hour flat rate/Timesheets will be required

Schedule

This is a part-time, hourly position with the following weekly schedule (approximately 18 hours/week):

  • Monday – Thursday: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM (morning ESL classes)
  • Monday & Tuesday: 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM (evening ESL classes)

Essential Functions
  • Plan and deliver standards-aligned ESL instruction for adult learners at varying proficiency levels.
  • Assess learner progress using approved placement and progress-monitoring instruments (e.g., Best Plus/ Best Literacy, as applicable).
  • Maintain accurate attendance and student performance records in a timely manner.
  • Differentiate instruction to support learners with diverse educational backgrounds, literacy levels, and goals.
  • Create a welcoming, respectful classroom environment that supports adult learners' confidence and persistence.
  • Collaborate with program staff to support learners' transitions into civics, workforce, or further education pathways.
  • Communicate regularly with the Assistant Director regarding student progress, attendance concerns, and classroom needs.
  • Participate in required program meetings, professional development, and trainings as scheduled.
  • Adhere to all Rock Hill Schools (York District Three) and grant-funder (WIOA/AEFLA) policies and reporting requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic principles of second-language acquisition and adult learning.
  • Ability to plan and deliver instruction appropriate for students with varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with adult learners and maintain a respectful, inclusive classroom environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use technology and instructional resources to support classroom instruction.
  • Ability to assess student needs, monitor progress, and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, educational, and language backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain professionalism, and handle sensitive student matters appropriately.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution (required).
  • Ability to work the required schedule:
    Monday–Thursday mornings and Monday/Tuesday evenings.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Comfort with basic data entry and use of instructional technology.
Preferred
  • Valid South Carolina teaching certificate (preferred, not required).
  • Experience teaching ESL, ELL, or adult education learners.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills relevant to RHAE's learner population (preferred, not
