General Definition of Work
A Middle Level English/Language Arts (ELA) Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing instruction that helps students in grades 5–8 develop strong reading, writing, speaking, and critical-thinking skills. The teacher creates a supportive and engaging classroom environment that encourages students to explore literature, understand language conventions, and express their ideas clearly.

Essential Functions
- Plan and teach standards-aligned lessons in reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary.
- Guide students in reading a variety of texts, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and informational sources.
- Teach the writing process, including planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
- Provide constructive feedback to support student growth in reading comprehension and writing skills.
- Use assessments (formative and summative) to monitor progress and adjust instruction.
- Integrate technology to support literacy and communication.
- Create a positive, inclusive classroom culture where all students feel safe and motivated to learn.
- Communicate regularly with families about student progress and classroom activities.
- Collaborate with colleagues to plan curriculum, analyze data, and support school wide initiatives.
- Participate in professional development and maintain knowledge of current ELA instructional practices.
- Strong understanding of middle-level literacy standards.
- Commitment to fostering a love of reading and writing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Exceptional knowledge of the needs of students.
- Knowledge needed to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and to speak effectively with middle-aged students and/or employees in a school environment.
- Knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of effective and innovative instructional and student evaluation techniques.
- Strong skills in classroom management, collaboration, and differentiated instruction.
- Strong communication skills with students, staff, administration, and the public.
- Understanding a child’s behavior and dynamics.
- Skilled in problem solving and patience.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
- Ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work and effectively attend to students.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Application of percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations is required.
Certification and Experience
- South Carolina certification in middle level language arts/English
- Experience with differentiated instruction and inclusive teaching practices
- Familiar with educational technology tools
- Strong classroom management skills and a growth-oriented mindset
Special Requirements
- Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation
- May be required to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
