Position Summary
The Data / Telecom Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for data, voice, fiber optic, and telecommunications systems. This role analyzes project documents, performs detailed take-offs, evaluates labor and material costs, and supports the successful pursuit of profitable low-voltage and technology projects.
Key Responsibilities- Review drawings, specifications, RFPs, and scope documents for data and telecom projects
- Perform detailed quantity take-offs for structured cabling, fiber, pathways, and equipment
- Prepare complete cost estimates for data, voice, fiber optic, wireless, and telecom systems
- Develop labor units, production rates, and installation strategies
- Solicit, analyze, and level vendor and subcontractor pricing
- Prepare bid proposals, scope clarifications, assumptions, and exclusions
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and operations during bid development
- Identify value engineering options and cost-saving alternatives
- Maintain estimating databases, pricing models, and historical cost data
- Participate in post-bid reviews and project handoff meetings
- Ensure estimates comply with industry standards, codes, and company procedures
- Structured cabling (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A)
- Fiber optic systems (single-mode & multimode)
- MDF/IDF buildouts and rack systems
- Cable pathways (conduit, cable tray, J-hooks)
- Wireless access point infrastructure
- Outside plant (OSP) cabling (if applicable)
- Data center and mission-critical environments (if applicable)
- 3+ years of experience estimating data/telecom or low-voltage projects
- Strong understanding of structured cabling and telecom systems
- Ability to read and interpret low-voltage drawings and specifications
- Proficiency with estimating and take-off software (Accubid, Trimble, Bluebeam, or similar)
- Knowledge of labor units, material pricing, and installation methods
- Familiarity with TIA/EIA, BICSI, and applicable codes and standards
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills
- Field experience as a Data/Telecom Technician or Foreman
- BICSI RCDD, Installer, or Technician certification
- Experience with design-build and negotiated projects
- Understanding of construction scheduling and coordination
- Office-based with occasional jobsite walks and pre-bid site visits
- Fast-paced bid environment with multiple deadlines
- Accuracy of estimates versus actual project costs
- Bid hit rate and profitability
- Timeliness and completeness of bid submissions
