Position Overview
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to join a high-tech automation team in Rock Hill, SC. This position is ideal for a problem-solver who enjoys designing, programming, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning advanced automation systems.
The Controls Engineer will take automation projects from initial programming and in-house validation through machine startup and commissioning at customer locations worldwide. This position offers hands-on technical challenges, international travel, exposure to advanced automation technology, and opportunities for long-term career growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Program, build, test, and validate sophisticated industrial control systems.
- Develop automation solutions incorporating PLCs, HMIs/OITs, pneumatics, servo systems, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
- Program and configure machine controls to meet technical specifications and customer requirements.
- Lead machine setup, startup, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.
- Support machine commissioning at U.S. and international facilities.
- Travel to customer facilities throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, and other international locations.
- Troubleshoot controls, electrical, and automation issues during machine startup and production.
- Continuously improve machine performance, reliability, efficiency, and process capabilities.
- Identify opportunities to optimize automation systems and reduce operational issues.
- Develop clear control specifications and comprehensive technical documentation.
- Maintain accurate project documentation throughout development and commissioning.
- Provide after-sales technical support to customers.
- Deliver technical training and guidance to customers and end users.
- Work closely with electrical, mechanical, engineering, production, and customer teams.
- Support projects from initial development through final installation and successful customer operation.
- Take ownership of assigned projects and responsibilities while maintaining strong communication with internal and external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related ABET-accredited field.
- Approximately 2–4 years of hands-on experience in industrial automation or controls engineering preferred.
- Experience programming and troubleshooting PLC systems.
- Experience with HMI/OIT systems and process control.
- Understanding of industrial automation and machine controls.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical and controls-related issues.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and understand technical documentation and specifications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively for machine commissioning and technical training.
