The purpose of this position is to assists contractors, developers, property owners, and the general public with permit applications, inspections, licensing information, zoning and related building services processes.
This job works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Receives, reviews, and processes permit applications and related documentation for residential and commercial projects.
- Provides customer service assistance to contractors, developers, property owners, and the public regarding permitting procedures, requirements, fees, and inspection scheduling.
- Reviews permit applications for completeness and accuracy prior to routing for technical review.
- Coordinates permit processing activities with inspectors, plans examiners, and other county departments.
- Enters permit data into computerized permitting and record management systems.
- Calculates permit fees, collects payments, issues receipts, and balances daily transactions.
- Schedules inspections and assists with coordination of inspection activities.
- Maintains permit records, files, reports, and related departmental documentation in accordance with records retention requirements.
- Assists with preparation of reports, correspondence, and administrative documents.
- Responds to inquiries regarding building codes, zoning requirements, inspection procedures, and permit status.
- Serves as secretary for the planning commission, zoning appeals and building appeals boards, takes minutes, prepares agenda and advertise meetings.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college.
- One year of permitting, clerical or administrative support, customer service or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Unavoidable hazards refer to job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Must obtain ICC Permit Technician certification within one (1) year of employment.
