Jail Correctional Officer
The purpose of this job within the organization is to perform protective services work involving the detention and incarceration of adults and juveniles awaiting judicial action or serving limited sentences in the City jail facility. This job works under close supervision according to set procedures.
Minimum
Education and Experience Requirements:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and experience in a job that requires extensive public contact. Training or experience in law enforcement is helpful. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
SCCJA Basic Jail Certification to be completed within 1 year of employment.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the purposes of correctional institutions.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and initiative in a variety of situations and take appropriate action in a firm, courteous, and tactful manner.
- Ability to communicate with courts, probation departments, juvenile counselors, and other related agencies regarding detention or disposition of prisoners.
- Ability to meet specific physical requirements established by a competent medical authority.
- Ability to wear a respirator/air pack and pass a respirator fit test.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
- Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
