Sergeant MacDougall Correctional Institution, Ridgeville; BERKELEY Level 2

Job Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate subordinate security assigned to housing units, including custody and control of inmates.
• Conduct routine inspections of living areas to ensure compliance with security, safety, and sanitation standards.
• Investigate alleged misconduct by inmates and security personnel.
• Assist in conducting formal and informal counts.
• Supervise performance, conduct, and appearance of security staff; prepare employee evaluations.
• Advise on disciplinary actions and train staff to required performance standards.
• Prepare reports as needed.
• Report to and work under the general supervision of the Shift Lieutenant.

• High school diploma and 18 months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• Degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for half of required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.
• Must successfully complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
