Position: Generator Technician II (49071)
Hourly Salary Range: $22.65 - $28.31 / DOQ

General Description:

The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform tasks involving skilled electrical and mechanical installation, maintenance and repair work. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent. Requires one to two years in electrical and mechanical equipment maintenance or closely related experience. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and current DOT Medical Card required, or the ability to obtain within 6 months.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the standard electric utility practices, methods, tools, and materials used in electric distribution construction and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the hazards of the trade and of appropriate precautionary measures.
  • Knowledge of the municipal electrical code provisions.
  • Knowledge of electric meters and ability to test using volt meters, ammeters, and other testing devices.
  • Skilled in the use and care of tools, materials, and equipment as it pertains to the electrical trade.
  • Proficiency in a window-based computer environment.
  • Ability to detect flaws or defects in the electrical control systems and equipment and to make necessary repairs.
  • Ability to design, interpret and diagnose motor control schematics and implementations.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally, demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
  • Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Performs weekly and monthly inspections on all City owned generators.
  • Prepares weekly and monthly reports relating to generators for both internal and external agencies.
  • Schedules and assists with bi-annual generator maintenance.
  • Performs minor repairs and parts replacement on all City owned generators.
  • Monitors fuel supplies and schedules deliveries for all generator sites.
  • Monitor, test, and control switch gear and transfer switches associated with City owned generators.
  • Install, test, and repair single and polyphase electric meters.
  • Install and wire instrument transformer rated metering equipment.
  • Assists substation crews in routine and emergency switching operations and equipment repairs.
  • . Assists in the installation and testing of single and polyphase electric meters. Installs and wires instrument transformer rated metering equipment.
  • Assists with traffic signal maintenance and repairs, fiber-optic communications installation, AMI infrastructure management, radio equipment testing and repairs, and performs electric locates.
  • Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
