Telecom Technician 3

Role Overview

Responsible for the installation, planning, organization, and scheduling of communications cabling and equipment to complete assigned work orders. Duties include assigning tasks, ensuring installation quality, performing inspections, monitoring compliance, preventing safety issues, and overseeing a crew of five or more technicians and apprentices. The role requires hands‑on experience with hand tools and power tools, knowledge of telecom systems, blueprints, and codes, and a commitment to becoming a qualified BICSI Technician.

The position is full‑time with company benefits.

Responsibilities
  • Have knowledge of and understand the safe use of hand tools and various power tools
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Follow safety policies and procedures
  • Actively participate in daily safety and work briefings
  • Install various types of low‑voltage cable
  • Install, inspect, terminate, test, and troubleshoot ISP/OSP telecommunications systems (fiber optics, Category 5, 6, 6A, and associated equipment)
  • Survey and document existing telecommunications infrastructure such as copper and fiber cables, active and passive components using electronic devices
  • Sketch rack elevations, floor, and wall elevations
  • Participate in design document reviews and activities to ensure timely, cost‑effective, and quality project outcomes
  • Install, power up, and connect fiber uplinks of network equipment into a telecommunications cabinet/rack
  • Calculate grounding conductor, conduit sizing, and raceway layouts
  • Produce four‑week look‑ahead plans, including productivity planning, material procurement, staging, and weekly tracking
  • Train and supervise apprentices in a team environment to facilitate cable installation from telecommunications rooms (TR) to work area outlets (WAO)
  • Maintain accurate as‑built drawings and update them at least once a week
  • Perform quality assurance checks of team work ensuring compliance with all requirements
  • Maintain a clean work area and participate in job‑site clean‑up
  • Secure company tools and materials daily
  • Travel up to 25% of the time, including domestic and/or international trips
Qualifications
  • 6+ years of prior experience in the commercial communications industry
  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Excellent safety record, valid driver's license, and clean driving record to operate company vehicles
  • Successful background check and drug test
  • Reliable transportation to and from the job site
  • Ability to pass a basic telecommunications knowledge test
  • Demonstrated experience reading and understanding plans and specifications
  • Strong communication, time‑management, and organization skills to meet deadlines and quality objectives
  • Consistent punctuality, teamwork, and a safe‑work environment commitment
  • Ability to wear long pants and a shirt that covers shoulders by six inches (company does not provide apparel)
  • Provide basic tools from the provided tool list prior to the first day of employment
Abilities
  • Lift, carry, and move objects up to 50 pounds on a regular basis; demonstrate physical strength and stamina
  • Relocate a 12‑foot stepladder without assistance
  • Work at various heights up to 60 feet and climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and ladders
  • Walk, climb, lift, squat, crawl, kneel, push, pull, and reach overhead on a routine basis
  • Possess good vision (may be corrected), color vision, and hearing and communication in English
  • Use a standard ladder without exceeding weight limits while carrying tools
  • Recognize when something is wrong or likely to go wrong
  • Apply general rules to specific problems to produce sensible answers
  • Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions, including finding relationships among seemingly unrelated events
  • See details at close range (within a few feet of the observer)
  • Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
Desired Skills
  • BICSI credentials, including Technician Manufacturing Certifications and/or Fiber Certifications
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications
