Position Overview
Visiting Assistant Professor, Religion department
Augustana College, Rock Island, IL, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the Religion department, beginning August 2026-27 academic year, with possibility of renewal for one additional year upon mutual agreement.
ResponsibilitiesWe seek a creative and reflective teacher, trained in the study of religion or related fields, who is enthusiastic about serving general education students in courses that fulfill the College’s “Reasoned Examination of Faith” () requirement. The successful candidate will teach 24 credits per 10‑month academic year – consisting of two semesters and an intensive J‑term – and will staff such as RELG 284/384 “Buddhism and Film” in the fall semester of 2026 and, in subsequent years, may teach RELG 150 “Encountering Religion”.
Responsibilities include preparing and delivering course material, fostering student engagement, and promoting equity and inclusion.
- Terminal degree (PhD) in Religious Studies or related fields; ABD will be considered.
- Appointment at the rank of visiting instructor or visiting assistant professor depending on degree completion.
- No research or campus service required, but faculty are encouraged to engage in departmental and college life beyond teaching.
- Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and ability to bring creative ideas for structuring .
The budgeted compensation for this position ranges from $43,000 to $46,000 per year, based on qualifications, experience, and rank.
