Seasonal Parks Maintenance

Overview

Under direct supervision, performs unskilled to semi-skilled work pertaining to the maintenance of Parks and sports fields throughout the City. Performs a variety of tasks using various hand and power tools in the establishment and maintenance of grounds, landscape plantings, and their confinements. May operate more complex equipment with the proper training or under supervision.

• Plants, maintains, rehabilitates, and constructs landscape areas and features throughout park and municipal landscapes.
• Uses push, self-propelled and riding mowers, string trimmers, and backpack blowers to maintain grounds.
• Collects and removes litter and trash from parks; cleans paths, planting beds, fountains, and lots.
• Prepares facilities before special events and maintains throughout the event.
• Paints equipment and structures as needed.
• Drives pickup trucks, motorized carts, riding mowers, tractors, field groomers, and small dump trucks.
• Repairs or replaces stone, brick, timber, or other edgings and retaining walls.
• Installs new plantings and removes old ones; uses augers, post-hole diggers, shovels, rakes, and tractors.
• Assists with clearing storm damage and cleaning flooded areas.
• Must be personable and responsive with the public.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old by the date they begin work.
• Applicants must possess at the time of interview, or verify the ability to acquire by the date work is scheduled to begin, a valid and unencumbered driver s license to become and to remain employed.
• All applicants are required to pass a background check before hire. Substance screenings are required of all applicants who were not employed the previous year.
• Requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written English instructions.
• Requires the ability to perform assigned work tasks in a variety of weather conditions.
• Requires the ability to operate and use hand and power tools normally associated with grounds maintenance, landscape work, and sports field maintenance.
• Members of the Maintenance Crew and/or Horticulture Crew will work together as both large and small teams and/or may be assigned to specific areas of responsibility as needed. This work requires the ability to tolerate extremes of weather and conditions commonly found outdoors. The successful applicant will perform frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, reaching, pulling, pushing, and squatting. Lifting up to 50 pounds repeatedly may be required.
  
  Normal hearing, the ability to speak, and depth perception is required.

The Seasonal Work period is expected to begin the first part of March and end mid-to-late October. Employees will be hired on the basis of experience, abilities, availability, an in person interview, and their ability to fulfill the work period requirement.

Hours:

Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Weekend work is required depending on crew assignment and needs of the Department.
