The Instructional Technologist plays a strategic role in advancing teaching and learning through technology by partnering with faculty, academic leadership, and IT to improve instructional quality, student engagement, and accessibility.
PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES FOR WHICH THIS PERSON IS ACCOUNTABLE:
1. Serves as a systems administrator in the College's learning management system (LMS) and provides advanced trouble-shooting in the LMS and other online media.
2. Stays informed of upcoming LMS features and changes and proactively communicates impacts to stakeholders.
3. Updates and maintains all Learning Tools Interoperability (LTIs) and Application Programing Interface (APIs) integrations.
4. Serves as a contact for key instructional technology vendors.
5. Serves as a liaison between Information Technology and the Center for Teaching and Learning.
6. Assists faculty with the integration of Canvas and third-party applications.
7. Coordinates course material adoptions with the bookstore using LTI integrations and Inclusive Access; supports faculty communication and implementation.
8. Serves as key cross-functional partner with Information Technology, Academic Affairs, and Student Services to ensure instructional technology systems align with institutional priorities.
9. Helps subject matter experts to:
1) integrate technology into their face-to-face and online classrooms; and
2) create criteria used to develop assessment instruments.
10. Performs pre-semester checks to ensure courses are ready to go live.
11. Assists in designing and developing faculty training programs on the use of Canvas and other instructional technology tools. Uses best practices in adult learning and change management when designing faculty training.
12. Remains current with, and has a thorough understanding of, emerging applications of instructional multimedia, instructional technology and trends in online education; implements improvements.
13. Researches, evaluates, and recommends appropriate hardware and software to achieve academic objectives while maintaining current knowledge of technology and instructional practices.
14. Monitors, evaluates, and supports emerging instructional technologies, including: AI supported teaching tools, adaptive learning platforms and learning analytics and early-alert tools. Advise faculty and academic leadership on ethical, pedagogically appropriate use of AI and educational technologies.
15. Remains current with Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it impacts online learning and assists subject matter experts in the implementation of Section 508 Accessibility requirements with regards to their instructional materials.
16. Promotes inclusive and accessible instructional design practices that support diverse learners, including students with disabilities, remote learners, and nontraditional students.
17. Coordinates multiple projects while producing high quality work under tight deadlines.
18. Collects and compiles student performance data via Canvas reporting and API calls and provides analyzed results to faculty, staff, and administrators as needed.
19. Operates within the professional confines of established Western policies and procedures.
20. Works closely with the Center for Teaching and Learning team to provide consistent and top-quality support to all Western faculty, staff, and students.
21. Completes other duties as assigned.
