Position Classification:The Mechanical Designer position may be filled by candidates in one of the following categories:
- Mechanical Designer Trainee – High school graduate with little or no relevant experience. CAD coursework, certifications, or technical training preferred.
- Mechanical Engineering Intern – Candidate actively pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree or a high school graduate with CAD certifications or technical training demonstrating drafting aptitude.
- Mechanical Engineer I / Designer – Mechanical Engineering graduate or candidate with 4-5 years of relevant manufacturing, design, or machine-building experience demonstrating equivalent competency.
This position creates and supports mechanical designs, drawings, layouts, bills of material, and engineering documentation for machine tool, automation, and industrial equipment projects. Responsibilities and level of independence will vary based on experience and classification within the Mechanical Designer role.
Essential Functions:- Works from sketches to create working drawings, layouts, details and bill of materials, utilizing orthographic and auxiliary projections and section.
- Understanding dimensional fits, stack ups and geometric tolerancing (ANSI Y 14.5)
- Has basic working knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic components.
- Incorporates power transmission components in design layouts. Examples: gears, belts, chains, clutches, brakes and ball screws.
- Has knowledge of specifications for materials and heat treat metals.
- Has basic knowledge of manufacturing and inspection equipment and practices.
- Measures and makes sketches of components and assemblies at workstation and at shop assembly area.
- Uses Auto Cad 2-D & Inventor 3-D computer drawing systems.
- Has the ability to work within schedules and meet critical deadlines.
- Quality of output will be responsibility of the individual and will be responsible to comply with safety rules and regulations at Bourn & Koch.
- The individual should be available to complete projects that may be weeks in duration.
- The individual must be able to conduct themselves professionally with customers, vendors, and other Bourn & Koch employees.
- The individual must be able to communicate both in writing and verbally in English.
- The individual may be standing for periods of up to 4 hours without breaks and or moving/climbing around machines and also must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Depending on workloads, may be required to work in other areas of the Company.

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment:Normal office environment, with exposure to shop conditions.
Physical Demands:The individual may be standing for periods of up to 4 hours without breaks and or moving/climbing around machines and must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Travel:Travel time dependent on unforeseen field issues. Should be less than 10% of the year.

Minimum:
High school diploma or GED.
PreferredEducation and Experience:
Pursuing or holding a BSME, CAD certification or relevant manufacturing/design experience. Candidates with 4-5 years of relevant manufacturing, machine-building, drafting, or design experience may be considered equivalent to an entry-level Mechanical Engineer.
