Under the general direction of the Business Taxes Administrator (BTA) III (Office Administrator), the Supervising Tax Auditor (STA) III (Audit Principal) is responsible for the administration of the audit program in the field offices. The Audit Principal plans, organizes and directs audit programs through subordinate supervisors and provides audit program guidance to field office supervisors. The incumbent is responsible for office audit functions including in‑depth field auditing and other administrative activities related to enforcing applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
The incumbent also fosters cooperation and integrates functions between audit and compliance staff. The position requires travel up to forty percent (40%) of the time, which may include overnight stays.

Competition is limited to individuals who meet at least one of the following promotional examination criteria:
- Have a permanent civil service appointment with CDTFA.
- Are current or former employees of the legislature for two or more years as defined in Government Code 18990.
- Are current or former non‑elected exempt employees of the executive branch for two or more consecutive years as defined in Government Code 18992.
- Are persons retired from the United States military honorably discharged from active duty, with a service disability or honorably discharged from active duty, as defined in Government Code 18991.
