Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Interpreter
The Educational Interpreter's primary function is to facilitate communication among deaf and hard of hearing students and their hearing peers, teachers and other personnel involved in a student's education through the act of interpretation and transliteration. Other educationally related duties may be performed as appropriate when the interpreter is not required to do interpreting.
Provide sign to voice and voice to sign interpreting, or visible to spoken and spoken to visible interpreting and voice (may include American Sign Language, a form of manually coded English, and/or oral interpreting) for deaf and hard of hearing students in mainstream classes. Participate in meetings with other members of the educational team dealing with the development and review of the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) and progress in the classroom, as related to the student's ability to process information.
Provide interpreting for situations that are a part of the educational programs that occur outside of the school environment. Provide interpreting for extracurricular activities and parent meetings as necessary. Assist in providing orientations to deafness and interpreting to hearing students and staff. Provide tutoring when necessary and appropriate, when interpreting is not needed, as directed by the classroom teacher.
Associate or Bachelor's Degree preferred Must meet ISBE certification requirements.
