TITLE: Program Driver/Assistant
FUNCTION: To offer safe and reliable transportation to, from, and during recreation programs, while providing respectful and supportive assistance to individuals with disabilities.

Available shifts vary from weekdays, evenings, and weekends. Locations vary.
Position Qualifications- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
- Possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
- Must successfully pass a drug screening and provide a driver’s abstract that is acceptable based on Agency standards.
- Able to provide timely and safe transportation to NISRA participants and staff.
- Previous experience or a desire to work with individuals that have physical and/or mental disabilities.
- Must be able to successfully complete physical demands of this position as detailed out in this job description.
- Ability to effectively communicate with others in a recreation setting.
- Display a positive attitude, demonstrate motivation and enthusiasm.
- Ability to follow instructions and solve problems especially regarding transportation challenges.
- Must have reliable personal transportation to and from work locations.
- Must be able to work and drive safely under potentially stressful conditions.
- Responsible for the transportation of individuals with physical and/or mental disabilities between various locations.
- Able to safely drive a 12-passenger van.
- Ability to navigate a digital application on a handheld device to complete timely pre and post trip vehicle inspections.
- Follow all driving laws and regulations when driving a NISRA vehicle.
- Attend annual training courses including but not limited to:
Safety School, Fleet Safety, Defensive Driving and other trainings as scheduled and required. - Safely use GPS navigation applications while driving.
- Ensure all passengers are safely secured using a safety belt before driving; maintain communication with other NISRA staff in vehicles to ensure passengers remain secure during rides.
- Safely load and unload participants in wheelchairs in and out of NISRA vehicles, which includes properly securing the wheelchair to the vehicle and ensuring the participant is secure in their chair.
- Proactively respond to situations and communicate all vehicle incidents timely to the Senior Manager of Operations.
- Obtain and maintain Handle with Care Level 3 certification, and First Aid/CPR certification.
- Complete required paperwork including, but not limited to, timesheets, safety forms, feedback, and accident/incident forms.
- Successfully demonstrate dependability, punctuality and flexibility.
- Consistently know whereabouts of assigned participants at all times.
- Adhere to NISRA’s safety policies, procedures and the NISRA Employee Handbook. Always keep participants safe.
- Follow instructions given by Program Leader and/or family members for assigned participants.
- Show respect to all individuals attending and working NISRA programs.
- Provide timely responses to all phone calls, Sling messages and emails.
- Proactively respond to situations and communicate any incidents timely to the appropriate Coordinator or Manager.
- Assist in maintaining and completing inventory program for supplies and equipment.
- Successfully perform your required duties as a mandated reporter for the “Abuse and Neglected Child Reporting Act.”
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Actively participate by engaging and supervising participants with physical and/or mental disabilities and promoting independent skills.
- Assist with activities of daily living such as feeding, changing, toileting and transferring.
- Provide activity adaptations for participants as needed.
- Take initiative in helping the Program Leader such as setting up, greeting participants/parents/guardians, facilitating activity, etc.
