job summary

plans layout and wiring of electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment. Installs, repairs, and modifies new or existing equipment and systems to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.

minimum qualifications

successful completion of an approved and recognized apprenticeship program or

five years full-time work experience as an electrician and

possession of a valid driver's license is required.

this position is considered a safety‑sensitive position. Candidates who are selected to fill safety‑sensitive positions must pass a required drug test as part of the pre‑employment background check process.

candidate documentation requirements

* degrees awarded outside of the united states with the exception of those awarded in one of the united states territories and canada, must be credentialed by the world education services (wes), educational credential evaluators (ece) or a national association of credential evaluation (naces) member organization.

knowledge, skills, abilities, and characteristics
  • thorough and extensive knowledge of the principles, methods, and technologies relative to electrical construction, installation and repair.
  • skill in installing, operating, testing, dismantling and repairing all types of electrical equipment used in building construction.
  • skill in identifying electrical problems, and repairing and maintaining motors, lighting, power, control, fire alarm, high voltage, u.p.s. Systems and low voltage systems.
  • skill in interpreting blueprints and computing distances.
  • proficiency in interpreting and following blueprints, electrical diagrams and local electrical codes.
  • skill in the installation of all conduit systems, wiring, electrical devices, lighting fixtures, motors, switches, panels, motor control centers and switchboards.
  • knowledge of city, state and local building codes as they relate to electrical construction.
  • this position may require moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout cook county, for which the employee must provide his or her own adequate means of transportation.
  • this position occasionally requires various types of physical exertion including, but not limited to climbing, lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving moderate to heavy weight.
