Job Summary
Line Haul Drivers operate tractor‑trailer combinations over long distances, loading, securing, and transporting freight while ensuring compliance with DOT regulations and safety standards.
Primary Responsibilities- Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations and Hours of Service.
- Pass medical, drug, and alcohol tests.
- Perform pre‑trip inspections of vehicles.
- Secure freight on trailers to prevent shifting during transit.
- Use tablets/phones to record delivery information and navigate.
- Unsecure freight and unload at drop‑off locations with hand trucks.
- Be available for around‑the‑clock shifts and extended periods away from home.
- Must read, write, and speak English.
- 12 months of tractor‑trailer driving experience or graduation from a state‑certified truck school, or completion of the Old Dominion training program.
- Valid Class A CDL with double/triple trailers, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, and vehicle maintenance.
- Must meet or exceed US Department of Transportation medical standards.
- Must pass drug and alcohol tests.
- Must successfully complete orientation/training program with an Old Dominion trainer.
- Alert and focused driving up to 11 hours.
- Stand, walk on concrete, pavement, wood, metal, and sometimes wet or slippery surfaces; occasionally bend, kneel, or crouch to secure freight.
- Climb in and out of vehicle cab 8–10 times per day.
- Move freight up to 500 lbs on dolly or cart; lift or pull freight up to 500 lbs.
- Carry freight 1–100 lbs over short distances.
- Load and unload trailers weighing up to 50,000 lbs.
- Install and remove tire chains, operate manual transmission, use hand trucks, pallet jacks, and shrink wrap.
- Use cognitive skills for navigation, reading manifests, and communicating with customers.
- Attendance is required.
Compensation range: $20.15–$38.95 per hour (average annual pay about $107,000). Rates vary by route.
