Overview

This is a civilian (non-uniformed) role, as part of the Australian Public Service (APS) workforce within Navy. Our psychologists have a diverse organisational and operational psychology role, in support of Navy members on Navy Establishments. We work as part of a broader psychology team of professionals, including psychology assistants, work closely with other health professionals, and command teams.

In this role, you will be a part of the Navy Psychology West section, providing psychological support to Navy members and contributing directly to Navy’s capability and national security. The services delivered by an APS 6 Psychologist include referrals from Command for advice, referrals from Navy members for work-related support, mental health training delivery, operational mental health screening, critical incident mental health support and organisational interventions.

Please note that this role is an 18-month non-ongoing position.

About our Team

The Navy Psychology West team provides the full scope of Navy Psychology services to Navy Fleet Units and the Garrison Shore Establishment, at HMAS Stirling (Garden Island in Rockingham WA).

In addition, Navy Psychology West is responsible for the delivery of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Program for the Submarine Force.

The team works together to achieve a high standard of psychology service provision, liaising regularly with command elements, health providers and other wellbeing stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Provide referrals from Command for advice.
  • Provide referrals from Navy members for work-related support.
  • Deliver mental health training.
  • Conduct operational mental health screening.
  • Provide critical incident mental health support.
  • Implement organisational interventions.

Qualifications and capabilities include:

  • Capable of performing a range of psychology services including psychological assessments, training delivery, report writing, brief psychological intervention, critical incident management mental health support, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Drawn to working in the operational, occupational and clinical space, able to adapt to a changing environment to match operational tempo.
  • Ability to provide advice on complex and sensitive issues taking into account conflicting needs.
  • Ability to build and sustain effective working relationships with team members and actively participate in teamwork and group activities.
