Location:

This position can be located in either Rockland or Augusta; requires travel throughout Knox, Lincoln, Waldo, and Sagadahoc counties. Partial telework is possible with management approval.

Salary: $25.68 – $34.65 per hour (includes a $3.00/hr stipend; an additional $1.00/hr stipend is available with a relevant Master’s degree). Starting pay for new employees hired into this position is $27.73/hr (step 3 of the pay scale).

Core Responsibilities
  • Perform professional social work for incapacitated and dependent adults.
  • Conduct Adult Protective Services investigations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation, guardianship studies, and assess capacity to make decisions.
  • Assess the need for public guardianship, complete and file petitions, and testify in court as necessary.
  • Investigate allegations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of incapacitated and dependent adults and identify and arrange for support services.
  • Carry out the APS investigations process in a timely manner, including interviewing clients, alleged perpetrators, and collateral contacts and requesting and reviewing records.
  • Document all investigation activities in case notes.
  • Advocate for and coordinate the provision of services.
  • Maintain accurate case records of activities, write summaries, reports, letters, and memos.
  • Exercise discretion in decision‑making while carrying out investigation activities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Social Work/Social Welfare or in a related field with at least 12 courses in behavioral science, social science, or social work.
  • Conditional or full licensure as a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) issued by the Maine State Board of Social Work Licensure (or eligibility to obtain).
  • At least one year of experience working with incapacitated and dependent adults (please describe this experience in your cover letter).
Special Requirements
  • Conditional or full LSW licensure at the LSW level issued by the Maine State Board of Social Work Licensure.
  • Earned BA/BS in social work or social welfare for LSW eligibility; BA/BS in a related field for LSW‑conditional.
  • Valid Class C Maine Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

  • Retirement: the State contributes 14.11% of the employee’s pay toward the Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MainePERS).
  • Parental leave: six weeks of fully paid parental leave for all employees welcoming a child (including non‑birthing and adoptive parents); additional unpaid leave may be available under the Family and Medical Leave Act.
  • Benefits may vary somewhat according to specific collective bargaining agreements and are prorated for part‑time positions.
