Position: Accountant/Auditor I/II/III, Grade 18/21/23

Accountant/Auditor III

The Department of Finance is responsible for the financial administration of the County government, including accounting and payroll, debt and cash management, tax billing and revenue collection, economic and revenue forecasting, and risk management.

The Department of Finance is recruiting for an Accountant/Auditor III as part of their mission to prudently manage financial operations, recommend and implement sound fiscal policies, safeguard public assets, and encourage a safe environment on public property. The selected employee will perform professional accounting/auditing work. The employee must understand generally accepted accounting principles (U.S. GAAP). Experience with Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) accounting standards and other requirements related to governmental, enterprise, special revenue, internal service, and fiduciary funds, and County grants is preferred but not required.

The employee will be expected to be proficient in using large ERP accounting systems and other current technology.

This position may be underfilled at the Accountant/Auditor I, Grade 18 or at the Accountant/Auditor II, Grade 21.

What You'll Be Doing

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing the monthly and annual close work papers for the assigned funds that includes detailed analyses of accounts;
  • Preparing records for the disbursement of funds;
  • Preparing financial statements and disclosures for the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report;
  • Preparing complex account reconciliations and journal entries;
  • Serving as a financial resource for other departments; researching and implementation new standards, processes, and policies;
  • Preparing other reports to meet County, state, and/or federal mandates.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

If filled at Accountant/Auditor III:
Three (3) years of experience performing professional accounting work comparable to the Accountant/Auditor II.

If filled at Accountant/Auditor II:
Two (2) years of experience performing professional accounting work comparable to the Accountant/Auditor I.

If filled at Accountant/Auditor I:
One (1) year of experience performing professional accounting work.

All Levels –

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in accounting; or a bachelor's degree in Business Administration or Public Administration or a related field with a major of accounting coursework.

All Levels – Substitution:
Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) may be substituted for a degree in Accounting or a major in Accounting.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated Qualified, placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for an interview.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:

  • Financial statement preparation
  • Complex reconciliations of transactions in multiple systems; of general ledger and subsidiary transactions; and/or complex accounting transactions
  • Using integrated accounting systems
  • Proven history of meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Communicating complex accounting issues non-financial colleagues
