The City of Rockville is seeking responsible, enthusiastic, and highly organized individuals to serve as Camp Directors for our summer programs. Camp Directors are the primary leaders of their assigned camp and are responsible for the daily supervision of staff, coordination of activities, communication with families, and overall safety and well-being of all participants.

This role is ideal for individuals who are strong communicators, natural leaders, and passionate about creating a fun, inclusive, and memorable camp experience for children and teens.

Responsibilities
  • Provide daily leadership and oversight of all camp operations, staff, and participants.
  • Plan, organize, and implement a well-rounded schedule of age-appropriate activities, trips, and special events.
  • Supervise, support, and evaluate Camp Leaders, Counselors, and Volunteers; provide coaching and feedback to ensure high-quality program delivery.
  • Maintain active and engaged supervision, ensuring camper safety at all times, including during transitions, open play, aquatic activities, and off-site trips.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for parents/guardians—communicating schedules, addressing concerns, and providing timely updates.
  • Manage camper behavioral concerns using positive guidance strategies and in accordance with City and departmental policies.
  • Oversee completion of administrative tasks such as attendance, incident reports, medication logs, and end-of-day procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all City of Rockville policies, Maryland COMAR regulations, and camp safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with Recreation Program Supervisors and City staff to report injuries, emergencies, or unusual situations immediately.
  • Model professionalism, inclusiveness, and team collaboration at all times.
  • Strong leadership abilities with the capacity to supervise staff and manage group dynamics.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, positive, and solution-oriented in fast-paced situations.
  • Knowledge of youth development, recreational programming, and activity planning.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required (training provided if needed).
  • Additional certifications or trainings (e.g., Medication Administration, Lifeguarding, or Behavior Management) may be required depending on the camp.
Experience
  • Minimum two or three years of experience working in a camp, school, youth recreation, or child-focused environment.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in planning and implementing youth programs preferred.
Education
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in Recreation, Education, Child Development, or a related field preferred.
