Responsibilities
  • Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and work in collaboration with the general education teacher under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor.
  • Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
  • Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Serve as the primary classroom teacher for up to 7 students and act as case manager; classroom is supported by a team of para educators.

This position is for a special educator who will serve as the primary classroom teacher for up to 7 students. The special educator will serve as case manager and classroom teacher. The classroom is also supported by a team of para educators. The wage range for this position is a salary between $64,591 and $131,472 based on education and experience. Knowledge,

Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and MCPS special education program.
  • Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments.
  • Thorough knowledge in methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position.
  • Understanding of ESSA (2015), IDEA (2004), and related state and federal policies and procedures for special education.
  • Ability to provide instructional support and to adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Education, Training, Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
  • Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
  • Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment (elementary or secondary).
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Certificate/License:
    Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
